Amy Porter has had a thing for her twin brother’s best friend since she was a teenager. After being considered “one of the boys” throughout her childhood, he’s the first guy to look at her and see past the tomboy she used to be. Unfortunately, he’s also completely off-limits. She does her best to move on as the years go by, but it’s not until her life takes a drastic turn that she finally accepts the fact that they aren’t meant to be. However, as her world crumbles around her, Nate always seems to be close by to help her pick up the pieces.
Nate Miller knows that Amy is the one girl he can never have. No matter how badly he wants her, he won’t risk destroying his friendship; especially when her brother goes overseas with the Marines and makes Nate promise to look out for her. As life continues to get in the way and keep them apart, the only logical choice is to give up… but giving up is the last thing he wants to do.
With so many obstacles stacked up against them, can they make it or are they headed for a breakdown?
Forbidden romance. In love with the brother’s best friend. Second chance romance. These are all of my favorite tropes. Combine them together and what could go wrong? Not much. Ellie Grace did a great job turning them into a sweet and enjoyable read.
Amy is the tomboy, tagalong, twin of brother, Dex, and Nate is Dex’s best friend. Dex plays the protective brother roll to a tee. He’s not afraid to stand between Amy and anyone. No one’s allowed to date his sister especially his friends.
“Someday you’ll meet a guy who really sees you,” he continues. “He’ll see you for who you are, beneath everything else. It won’t matter what I say, or threaten, to try and keep him away from you because you’ll be worth it to him. HE won’t be scared of me, and he’ll fight for you, because nothing I could ever do to him would be worse than not having you.”
Fighting their feelings is something Amy and Nate started doing in high school. To Nate, Dex might as well be family and disrespecting him to date his sister just isn’t a line he is interested in crossing, no matter how strong his feelings are for Amy. As years go on, these two are sporadically thrown into each other’s paths as they face obstacles and tragedies. After tip toeing around each other for far too long they are finally forced into each other’s lives and to put their feelings and loyalty to the test.
Amy and Nate were adorable. They just made my heart full when they were together. Nate was really a sweetheart. There were no other words for him. He’s loyal to a fault, and an all-around genuine person. Despite the forbidden aspect, for the most part their journey was drama free. Their love was one you could just set back and enjoy it as it developed with a smile on your face.
The only issue that I had with this book was the long narratives that I didn’t feel moved the story along. It seemed Amy or Nate would narrate for 1-2 pages about what was going on in their life. I just wanted to experience a little more. I only noticed it in the beginning of the book. I’m not sure if I just got used to it or it got better.
Overall this was a good read that I read in one sitting. I’m definitely interested in checking out the other book(s) in this series. This book can be read as a stand alone.
Cover: Beautiful. Drew me in right away.
